Joy In: Burning Dinner

I'm fairly certain that the good people at the Southern Living test kitchen did not have this in mind when they said, "reserve the pan drippings":

In my dad's words, "That's a soaker."  It has now been soaking for almost 18 hours and I'm on my way to attempt to save my pan. This was one of those nights when I opened the oven and prayed to God that my smoke detectors were on a short hiatus. One that drew David away from studying for his test to ask, "How's it going in here?" (read: What on earth are you doing to dinner?) Happy Valentine's Day to him.

Luckily, the ham that was in the midst of the black tar you see above came out fine. As did my grandmother's potato casserole and the rolls (...ok so they were the crescent rolls that come in the can...you can't really screw those up). There was just no glaze made out of the aforementioned pan drippings to put over the sliced ham, but that's what they invented mustard for. So the Valentine's Day dinner wasn't perfect...but it made me laugh, almost as much as this did:

Oh, the romance. He actually did write a very thoughtful note in a card, so he did deliver. Good boy! That note came with these:

Good job, honey. I can blog and breathe in the Lily smell at the same time...mmmmmmmmm.

Well, I hope you all had a fantastic Monday/February 14th/Valentine's Day, however you prefer to look at it. If you need me, I'll be putting that Pampered Chef food scraper thingy that I got for our wedding to good use. Any tips from people that have had similar disasters are appreciated!!

SIDE NOTE: See, what happened was...I was cooking a ham about half the size of the one called for in the recipe so we wouldn't be eating ham for the next month = I halved the recipe for the glaze too, BUT I still used a 9 x 13 pan = glaze went really thin because it had more room to spread out = the tar. Next time, I'll use my 8 x 8. I'm brilliant, I know.

  1. I am simultaneously saying "awww" and "hahaha!" I haven't burned something too badly YET, but that's only because I haven't been brave enough to cook much. I think all newlyweds must have to go through this, like a rite of passage or something. Glad you guys still had a great dinner! :)

  2. eeeuw. i hope you can save your pan; if not, it probably needs to go into the hazardous waste bin! i all too often burn metal pans, like simmering soups or forgotten porridge pots, and there's nothing like a paste of baking soda & a little water to cut through that burned on carbon stuff. i'm talking about a thick, gooey paste that you slather over the burned on stuff then leave for a day or two.

this paste kind of dissolves the burnt on gunk, not like magic, but almost. some elbow grease is still required, and a plastic scraper is also useful if you are determined.

i'm still using the pots & pans that my parents received as a wedding gift nearly 60 years ago, and they still look pretty good, which is as good a testament to the baking soda paste cleaner as i can think of.

looks like you might need the extra extra large box of arm & hammer :o)

  3. Christianne, that was pretty much what I was saying when I pulled it out of the oven--first "yikes" then I just started laughing. I think you're right, though, we all go through this; I think we should just be proud of ourselves for getting decent dinners on the table MOST of the time! I hope you are still loving your newlywed time; how fun!

Helen, thank you for the advice! I will definitely give that a shot--my mom actually just told me to toss it and go get a new one :) I'll give it one more try with the baking soda and water today, then I'll resort to the hazardous waste bin. I'm so impressed that your parents pans have stayed in good shape for so long--sounds like it's a testament to baking soda AND what kind of pans they had! If you need me, I'll be at the store in the baking soda aisle...thank you again!

  4. Gosh this is hilarious!!! Your life resembles mine so closely, and that's why we are friends.
    1. I love Pampered Chef. I want a Pampered Chef wedding shower. Did you have one of those? You'll have to tell me which things to ask for (with or without a Pampered Chef wedding shower)!
    2. Omg. That card from David. I am cracking up!!!!! I am sure the flower shop got a huge kick out of that and that it is currently hanging on their "best cards ever" bulletin board.
    3. Let's have a phone date soon!!
